American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual-gestural language that
- Differs from English, with its own linguistic properties.
- Is not a form of English.
- Has its own grammatical structures, syntax and rules.
- Uses handshapes, movement, orientation, non-manual signals and location.
- Relies heavily upon facial expressions. ASL facial grammar rules.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Approximately 500,000 deaf people in America and Canada use ASL on a daily basis! (This does not include hearing people who also use the language.)
- Like any other language, ASL has new terms continuously added due to cultural and technological changes.
- ASL is not universal! Each country has its own sign language; in fact, even British Sign Language is very different from ASL!
- More and more high schools and colleges/universities now accept ASL as a foreign language for credit.
- ASL is now the fifth most studied foreign language at American colleges/universities.
- Many learning institutions now have long waiting lists for admission to their programs.
- At LSO-21, you don't have to wait. Sign up today!
